Probably the one game that stared the entire modern day arcade is Pac-Man.  Even the young that do not know who The Beatles are still remember this classic game.  Pac-Man is still a staple of game play in every console and still in a lot of arcades.

If for some reason you lived under a rock and have no idea what Pac-Man is, it is a maze game where our hero Pac-Man travels through with the ghosts Winky, Blinky and Clyde chasing him around the board as he tries to gobble up all the power dots.

This simple formula has been reinvented as many ways as there are years.  With Ms. Pac-Man, Baby Pac-Man and so many others it is hard to keep count.  High scores have been set in record books and people still try to beat them.  Pac Man has a solid audience and always will, as the game is so simple yet challenging.

So if you are looking to kill some time and are wondering what game to download next don’t forget the game that started it all Pac-Man.

In Glendale California more than 50 arcade games are to be appraised, then sold at upcoming auction. [Read the full story here]

Arcade games going to auction

It turns out the state law that forced Glendale to hold onto dozens of vintage arcade machines doesn’t apply to the games at all, paving the way for an upcoming auction of the machines last valued at a total of roughly $100,000.

More than 50 games, which have been collecting dust in storage for roughly three years are to be appraised by a specialist and then sold at auction, according to a City Council decision made this week at a City Hall meeting.

The machines include games such as Galaga, a space-shooter game; Ms. Pac-Man, a maze game; and Extreme Hunting 2, a shooting game. There is also a two-seat, sit-down racing game called Initial D Arcade Stage Version 3.

Video games have always been a passion of mine.  When I was young I was always amazed by the slightest invention that was presented as the newest technology.  Pong blew my mind, then came Pac Man and there went my Saturdays as a kid.  I would chase Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Cylde through that maze all day with my friends and we would boost for what seemed like ever about our high scores.

I would go home and create games that I hoped would help me to get into designing games, that path lead me to my job working with The Hershey’s Shake Shoppe and Primetime Arcade as the “Ring Master” of an arcade in Seaside Height New Jersey.  It is the best job I ever had as nothing beats the sound of children laughing and family’s having fun.  I am in heaven.

Now since I started working I have been amazed at the new technology that these games offer for example the very popular ticket/redemption game “Fruit Ninja” that is based from the popular flash game of the same name.  The game allows for total interaction with the screen as instead of using the mouse as your sword you use your hand and swipe the screen.  The fruit flies in all directions as the kids and adults alike swing their hands wildly trying to slice it all.  It is one of the most popular games we have at the Shake Shoppe Arcade in Seaside Heights New Jersey.

Interaction with the game is the key to keep the audience coming back to play as the arcade industry is in competition with itself to a point.  To be successful you have to be able to offer the kids something they cannot do at home on their personal game controller.    Most new arcade games being offered are like this, things the kids do at home and then at the arcade can play on a different level.

Cut the Rope is also a new prize crane that offers the same excitement as the computer version that it was based from, but with the exception the gamer can now actually win more than just a score.  The prizes in this game run from 5.00 – 300.00 and the level of difficulty is set with a simple disk.  Winners are important to any successful arcade.  If no one wins they will not play anymore.  This game creates winners for the player and the arcade.

I would like to mention that the prize games are fun and all enjoy the chance of winning a prize for only a dollar, but my favorite game is the shooting games, like Terminator Salvation.  I LOVE THIS GAME!  When people ask me what is the best game we have I always tell them about the trills of becoming John Conner and saving the human race from the machines.  I like to coax the parent to play with the child as this creates a found memory for the family and isn’t that what it is all about, making memories that will bring happiness to the family for years to come and return customers for you.
